August 15, 2018
Meeting is NOT at the Brookhaven Ecology Center.
Hypertufa Workshop  (8:30 to 11 am in Mastic) and Annual "Covered Dish" Picnic (Noon to 4 pm in Brookhaven).

Please be sure to contact Lucille ASAP (lucille@lucillesgardens.com), or (631) 234-6122 if you would like to sign up for our Hypertufa workshop and email Bob (bob@vandykehome.com) to sign up for our annual picnic stating what food you would like to bring. Both events will be held on Wednesday, August 15 at two different locations.

Hypertufa Workshop

At 8:30 AM we will meet in at George Costa's home in Mastic for the hypertufa workshop which will only be open to LIMG members. After the hypertufa workshop we will meet at noon at the Post Morrow Foundation, in Brookhaven, for the annual LIMG "covered dish" picnic which is open to LIMG members, family and friends. See below for picnic details.

Hypertufa Workshop at Anna and George Costa's garden, 35 Biltmore Road, Mastic Beach, NY 11957, (631) 357-0066

Constructing a Hypertufa Planter Workshop: Due to the workshop material costs and the very limited space available, only LIMG members in good standing are invited to participate in this workshop. Workshop materials will be supplied by LIMG.
Items you need to bring:

  • Waterproof gloves (dishwashing style).
  • Cement (provided by LIMG), which is a part of the mixture, will cause your hands to dry and roughen up.
  • A sturdy pail to carry wet hypertufa mixture to your work site.
  • A work apron or your regular gardening clothing. (We might break out into a hypertufa tossing fight, which can become messy. Only kidding!)
  • You can bring your own forms if you wish, remember you will need a larger outer mold and a smaller inner mold that will fit into the larger mold. There should be at least a two-inch difference in diameter. It’s important that the smaller mold be about the same height as the larger one. Sturdy plastic forms or containers are great. For your first attempt at creating your artistic pot, George suggests you keep it simple. The finished planter will measure, whether round or square, approximately 9 to 12 inches at it widest point.
  • Feel free to contact George if you have any questions, Cell: 1-631-357-0066, email: gclv2fish@msn.com

Finally: No uncalled-for criticism of another person’s artistic hypertufa creation. They are all one-of-a kind masterpieces worthy of proud display within your garden.

  • Contact President Bob Van Dyke, at bob@limastergardener.com or (631) 859-0405, to tell him how many in your party are going to the picnic and what dish you plan to bring, so we do not have all vegetables and desserts.
  • You may also bring a guest or two, just include their names and increase your dish.
  • We’ll have use of the indoors for the bathrooms, electricity outlets for crock pots, etc. requiring electricity, and to set up our luncheon.
  • Post Morrow has said that they will also allow the use of portable barbecues if anyone is interested in grilling.
  • Members are also invited to bring lawn games for a fun day.
  • Here we MUST bring chairs and outdoor folding tables, for dining.

Please note: Members, when you call Bob to tell him the dish you are bringing, please also volunteer to help Bob with whatever help he needs the day of the picnic.
